Inspired by Anita Sarkeesian’s Video Game Tropes vs Women, I wanted to pitch a Zelda game where Zelda herself was the hero, rescuing a Prince Link.

Clockwork Empire is set 2,000 years after Twilight Princess, and is not a reboot, but simply another iteration in the Zelda franchise. It just so happens that in this case, Zelda is the protagonist. I’m a very big Zelda fan, and worked hard to draw from key elements in the continuity and mythos.

This concept work is meant to show that Zelda as a game protagonist can be both compelling and true to the franchise, while bringing new and dynamic game elements that go farther than being a simple gender swap.

While most of the animation is fantastic, there were some bits of animation (or lack thereof) that were unsettlingly lazy. Minor gripes include when E.Gadd hands Luigi something in the lab, and both characters freeze completely while the background continues to animate (breaking one of the first rules of creating believable 3D animation).

During the Secret Mine boss fight, there’s a little animation that plays after you defeat the first phase (which is extremely not fun, but that’s beside the point). While this is all well and good, they re-used the same animation for all three phases. Without even changing the boss’s character model (he looks different between each phase).

Maybe my inner animator is making mountains out of molehills, but it’s so un-Nintendo to be that lazy with game polish.

Animation gripes aside: In my case, I didn’t really have any trouble with Boolossus or the stage before King Boo. If anything, the three sisters encounter was a rather awfully-placed fight; a very difficult fight right at the end of a very long mission with no checkpoints.

also if you vacuum a ghost near a wall, some of the money will clip through the wall and disappear forever. seriously, nintendo
